Off the the land of ice and snow, to the midnight sun where the hot springs flow.

Going to Iceland in a few days as part of an organized adventure. A couple of friends signed up and wanted us to join them.

Awesome! Mrs. T and The Kid really want to go. Tentatively planning a post graduation trip in a couple summers. Have a blast, save some for us.

I used to know a guy who did a lot of hiking in Colorado. He named his great pyrenees Snuffles, which was a good name for the dog, but the human thought that he was naming the dog after one of Colorado's fourteeners, Mt. Sneffels, but he had mis-heard the name. Mt. Sneffels is named after Snæfell of course.

Great trip, except for the plane breaking at JFK. Took us three hours to get back to the gate and another three to get to a hotel, paid for by the airline. We missed the first day on our Iceland itinerary because of the delayed flight.

We did! And the weather was pretty good that day so we got a better view of the volcano than most.

Wait! People eat puffins?

I had lots of fish, particularly fish stew, as well as lamb, shark (which is a fish, I know) and chocolate. They make and love their chocolates. Also, just about every meal included a fabulous (mostly) dessert.

I did not try one of the hot dogs sold at small outlets in various cities. Apparently Iceland is known for them and the particular shack Bill Clinton ate a hot dog at was pointed out to me.

Ah, saw it for sale on the main street in Reykjavik.

The hot dogs are pretty good, but I think you see them a lot mainly because most food is just so damn expensive there that they make for a cheap meal.

Speaking of eating cute animals, I also had some horse meat. The meat must have been from an Icelandic horse, which are pretty adorable. They are the only horses allowed on the island (and if they leave they can't come back) and Iceland doesn't allow importation of meat.

One of our stops was at a horse farm where we not only sampled horse meat but were treated to a horse show by the trainers. Three Icelandic horses came out to their small track and the riders demonstrated the five gaits the ponies could do. It was pretty cool - the horses were really well trained.

While nowhere near as common as the sheep, we saw lots of horses in pastures across the island, particularly in the north.

And I think pretty much every animal is adorable, especially in baby form, but it hasn't turned me into a vegetarian.
