"But how else can we be tough on crime?"

Oklahoma state police can seize money in a person's bank account, on suspicion of a crime.

http://www.news9.com/story/32168555/ohp ... of-a-crime

First thoughts:

a) This sounds ludicrously easy to abuse.

b) The fact that this can be done at all, via some gadget and without the suspect's PIN or anything, probably indicates a backdoor of some sort that could just as well be used by crooks.

But then I saw this:

News 9 obtained a copy of the contract with the state.

It shows the state is paying ERAD Group Inc., $5,000 for the software and scanners, then 7.7 percent of all the cash the highway patrol seizes.

Holy fuck guys, don't tell me that's not a huge conflict of interest.

Yeah - I always used to feel safe from civil forfeiture because I rarely carry cash. Now, I just have to rely on the fact that I'm a Caucasian woman. :(

Civil forfeiture is unAmerican, unconstitutional and a stain on the concept of due process in this country. Few things piss me off more than hearing about cops taking stuff, especially money, from innocent people.

The election is between the two most hated people ever, there are problems with electoral fraud. The GOP is trying to override the majority vote that nominated Trump uncontested in what people here blindly claim to be the greatest democracy on Earth.
Police look more like military special forces than police while riding around with military vehicles and riot gear. People are killing each other regularly with assault weapons while others want to argue the finer points of why a weapon that is designed to be walk fired is not an assault weapon or a military weapon because it doesn't have selective fire. Well shit, WW1 and WW2 were fought with hunting rifles then.
Police were stealing cash from innocent people to line their own pockets till they got pressure on them federally. In response they are now going direct and taking from your bank accounts while companies make a profit selling them the equipment to steal from the public, all without any proof of anything required.
People are going broke paying medical bills while the drug companies post record profits. The wage disparity is the greatest ever seen and a few handfuls of people own more wealth than half the USA population while half of our government tells us that $15ph is too much (even though they get far more, like $250,000 for 9 minutes) and we have to be pragmatic while the other half of the government wants to reduce the minimum wage to remain competitive with Haiti, whose wages the Democrats forced to drop from 0.60cents per hour to 0.30 cents per hour by request of the textile industry in the USA.
US veterans are dying to get healthcare while the managers jest about cue times at Disney.
The USA has known 20 years or so of peace in it's entire history, the rest it was always engaged in some war. More people die by firearms in a few decades than in all the wars in the USA's history combined, and lets not forget that the USA has been at war almost constantly since it's creation, yet some people say that there is no firearm problem here.
Corporations are now people and apparently are more equal than them.
Legalized bribery of the politicians has not only been encouraged but the limits on how much have been removed.
The wealthy and lobbyists have fair representation in the government, while the people have what has now scientifically been shown to be no influence whatsoever. One has to pay over $100 and provide photo ID to get a one year fishing license but anyone can get a rifle simply by buying it with cash, no problem.
Schools are removing science and pushing for creationism, we make education expensive for the average person while giving tax breaks to those who don't need in amounts that could give everyone free education. People complain about the insignificant burden of food stamps for the poor while ignoring the parasites at the top.
Tens of thousands get together to protest against the inequality and the media ignores them as much as it can. The news lies and is covered under the 1st amendment. People get arrested for reading the Declaration of Independence out loud in public.

Yeah, can't see a problem at all. All good. Carry on.
Thanks for all the fish.

Yet so few see a problem with the way things are, while others tell us that we need to go slowly because the people can't get real change passed through congress. Apparently the situation isn't bad enough to be in urgent need of change. So take your time, relax, it's all good. There is no problem at all. It's all in your mind.
