Duma Elections

Postby Parrothead » Wed Sep 21, 2016 8:54 pm

They were held in Russia last weekend. Needless to say, United Russia won a super majority, allowing the Constitution to be changed. As usual, there were accusations of falsification of votes. Interesting part will be reaction from the West. Part of these elections were held in Crimea, giving them representation in the Duma. If states don't recognize the gov't in Crimea, they can't recognize those elected to the Duma from the region. Do the West only recognize those elected from regions other than Crimea or choose not to recognize the Duma, as a whole?

I read an article stating Putin is looking at reviving the MGB, possibly before the 2018 Presidential elections.

Eventually they will probably recognize "representatives" from Crimea. There is no way short of a very serious conflict that Russia is giving back any part of the Crimea that they have annexed.

Was that a typo, or is MGB different from KGB?

MGB was the precursor, basically Ministry of State Security. Later became KGB - Committee of State Security. story at RFE/RL

I may have to check what happened with results of previous Duma elections. IIRC, most viewed them as elected but in "unfair elections".
