Yes, I really liked it the first time and was actually looking forward to seeing it again to catch some things I missed the first time. That's why I suggested The Kid rent it yesterday (she was gone all weekend when Mrs. T and I watched it). I couldn't get into it at all. Maybe we just started it too late.

3rd time's a charm. Watched it again last night so The Kid could give it one more shot before we took it back. I planned on falling asleep this time because it was late. But I enjoyed it, and then watched all the special features. I still would like to read the story it is based on.

I loved Arrival! Reminded me a lot about Contact. :)

Speaking of movies I loved, went to see Lion last night (turns out it's half off ie $6 for movies on Tuesdays at the cinema near me, so I'm now thinking Tuesday movies are gonna be a regular thing). And it was an amazing film, definitely one of the best of the year and well deserving of its best picture nomination. A combination of the observation that you never know how big the world really is until you consider India, and very heartwarming- I don't think I've ever really cried much during a movie in years, but did at the end of this one. Maybe I'm getting soft in my older age. ;)

See page 1 of this thread. ;)
Thumper wrote:The Kid took us to see the movie "Lion" last week. I'd never heard of it. It was devastatingly wonderful. This isn't really a spoiler since it's a fact printed on the screen at the end of the movie, "Each Year 80,000 children go missing in India." 80,000 children. I'm still having trouble grasping that.
It was great going in and knowing nothing about the movie. We saw it before any previews or hype.

Our closest theatre also has cheap Tuesdays. Not always possible to make it out on a Tuesday but we've taken advantage when we could.

I can see how you could draw parallels between Contact and Arrival. I'd like to think that Carl would have approved. 8-)

Finally saw the Manchester by the Sea film. Good, but very sad, of course.

I confess I wasn't as impressed with Casey Affleck as much as I was by all the other actors around him. Don't get me wrong, he wasn't bad at it, but I was just so blown away by the kid and his ex wife by comparison, and it seems a shame that neither of them got an Academy Award if Affleck did.

I also wonder how many tourists Manchester by the Sea will be getting this year, as I'll be damned if that wasn't one of the most adorable seaside New England towns I've seen! Was definitely thinking that something very bad would've happened for Affleck to run away from there...

I agree about the kid, he was phenomenal. I wasn't as impressed with Michelle Williams. I'll admit I've not been moved by her other performances. But the other actors really helped make that movie. The brother's boating partner and his wife were great and hilarious. But Casey's performance. I identified with that character. I could feel every emotion that he worked so hard to suppress.

Didn't think of that, but yeah, I'd be surprised if they didn't see a boom in tourism this season. Looks like it would be wonderful to visit.

Looking for something to do Saturday night and running out of time, we grabbed a quick bite and took in Kedi. Its a documentary about street cats in Istanbul. It was fascinating until I fell asleep. It was a long day, the movie was slow, and I got weary of trying to keep up reading the sub titles. But still an interesting movie.

Logan: wow, a great movie. This is not your typical X-Men/Marvel flick.

Perhaps too lowbrow for the current folks around here :P but did catch Moana on the plane the other day, the new Disney film. It was fine enough as these things go, but the funniest part to me was it's not called Moana in Europe, but Vaiana. Like, in the English version they definitely call her Vaiana too, not sure if they deliberately reshot the dialogue or spliced it or what.

Anyway, looked into it, and turns out the reason for this is there's a famous Italian porn star named Moana. So all the other countries got to have the name change too. Ah, Disney!

On an interesting side note, Disney has a history of renaming characters in various country releases.
So my sister is Snow White.

Oh yeah, random thought about Moana/Vaiana I forgot earlier. You know what was really damn refreshing about this one to me? How at the beginning they're like "she's the daughter of the chief, and will grow up to be chief herself someday!" and then show that she's getting ready to rule and will be great at it.

It's funny, but I guess these days I'm so used to the "a woman can't rule, let's have an argument as a major plot device" line that it was refreshing to see it just be a non-issue and focus energies on other things.

That is refreshing. I've seen the preview, and I look forward to seeing the movie. Then, I look forward to seeing how they incorporate it into "Once Upon a Time". :D
