I have heard that it is bombing at the box office and that the fan base is up in arms because they are a bunch of whiney bitches. Frankly, I think people need to get over it.

My brother, my nephew, and I all agreed that as origin stories go it was done very well. They chose actors who very closely resembled the original actors playing Hans and Lando. Along with some Hollyweird magic they were believable as young versions of Hans and Lando as seen in previous versions of the show.

One of the things prequels have a difficult time with is being able to surprise you. That's because the back story has already been told before you get there. Like we all know that Hans won the Falcon from Lando in a high stakes card game. Yet, Lando was an accomplished card cheat and would never have parted with the Falcon. Especially seeing as he cheated and was never "caught". The back story was that Han's won the Falcon "Fair and Square". Watch the movie to see how they surprised us with that bit of story telling.


And they threw in a mystery woman who is very much a part of the story we never really knew about before now.

OK... go watch the movie. Or wait for the DVD.

It is bombing at the box office, to the point Disney is not planning anymore stand alones at the moment.

The fan base is not a bunch of whiney bitches. A lot of use hated The Last Jedi for a lot of good reason, and most of the people I talk to about it are not white men and they aren't threatened by strong women. But Colbert and his ilk can continue pushing that narrative because they hate themselves and all other white men.

I'll disagree about Last Jedi- I think people are being whiney bitches, but not for the reason you're citing. Rather, it's pretty clear going forward that Star Wars couldn't literally be the exact same storyline so they had to take some risks in moving the plot forward for all the characters. So far as I could tell, so much criticism focused on "Luke wouldn't do that!" type complaints, and frankly most of those complaints weren't really based in much beyond personal preferences.

As proof that people are whiney bitches, apparently there is now a push to "remake the Last Jedi as it should have been" by some independent guys trying to raise money. Or something. I mean JFC, get over it, it's just a movie.

So, finally saw it with the bf! Wait long enough and you can pay less at the second-run theater!

Honestly, I thought it was a fine enough film, with only one or two plot holes you could drive a truck through. A good summer flick, which is what we wanted. However, I'm not surprised it bombed at the box office for the simple reason that there was another major Star Wars film like six months ago- it would have made far more sense to hold onto the film until Christmas, and I'm not sure why they didn't given there's no Star Wars film otherwise this year.

Also, this might sound like a strange observation, but I heard it said a few months ago that, while when it first came out Star Wars was this ultra futuristic thing, it is now basically taking place in a dying civilization. This was prompted by a hilarious essay I read a few months ago, basically pointing out that a lot of the plot in the films hinges on the Star Wars universe having less maternity care than we have today-

Shortly after Padme announces to him that she's pregnant, Anakin has a dream that she dies while giving birth. The dream feels similar the same one he had about his mother before she died. "It's just a dream, honey," Padme tells him the next morning. "Yeah, okay," he replies, but the man never regains his chill.

He seriously spends two hours of the movie freaking out about his wife's uterus, and hypes himself up so much that he gets to the point of slaughtering tiny tots in a Jedi temple. All because he can't think of another way to save Padme from reproductive health complications.

Why didn't they just go to a goddamned obstetrician-gynecologist?

Anyway, this movie really drove home the concept that while a lot of Star Wars used to focus on amazing tech and glittering cities and what not, pretty much all the new stuff takes place in far grimmer circumstances in the galactic equivalent of DR Congo today. Like, most of the most recent movie had to do with gangster/ drug lord equivalents stealing mining goods to sell on the black market, and whole planets' economies are basically held up by only this and scavenging and the like. Not exactly a ton of innovators and disruptors in the galactic economy, if you know what I mean!

I remember when the very "first" SW was released, it was pointed out that the SW universe was a dirtier, grimier used universe compared to the sparkling clean ST universe. Now it's a little difficult to keep track of which way the society is going because the "newer" movies are not necessarily in the timeline. We've gone back and forth between present, past, and future. I think the recent movies are possibly a reflection of the time and attitude of the writer's realities. Maybe a little darker more pessimistic thinking than in 1977.
