Really? It always sounded to me like the late 70s were a pretty pessimistic time as well. So I'm curious if you think these days is even more so.

Yeah we had an energy crisis or two, and the lingering end of the cold war. But the 70's seem almost glib to me compared to what I see now. (But I was a little younger then and hadn't had all my hopes, dreams, and ideals crushed yet. :P )

I refer to that as "having all of my righteous indignation beaten out of me". :P

IIRC the Seventies also had a fair amount of SciFi that was focused on a post-nuclear war/dystopian future. Logan's Run was shown in 1976. Not to mention the Planet of the Apes series.

We pretty much all assumed that we would duke it out with the Soviets and the survivors would live in sealed cities or be chased by mutant bandits across the wastelands. :P

I hated the 70s. This feels similar.

Except for Star Wars. Which was a bright, shining beacon of hope in a very dark time. I think that's part of why it resonated with the populace.

I could definitely believe that. I definitely feel like all the most recent Star Wars films have a much darker undercurrent to them.

That's funny, because the original Star Wars was billed as a grungier, blue collar, sci fi. In contrast to the shining Star Trek, Buck Rogers, and the like.

It was grungier. But, there was a sense that the rebellion was going to win. Against all odds of course. I mean... they destroyed a deathstar man! The Last Jedi left you with the sense that the rebellion was all but stamped out.
