Holiday Season- Fun Stuff

around here gift giving has pretty much gone the way of the wind for most adults I know. They don't have the money for stuff that someone won't use or doesn't need (ok maybe socks)

If I do anything for folks this year it's buying a container of salt to keep in their cars

This year it's going to closely resemble a normal Christmas. It's named for people without family like me, or people without anything better to do like the old neighbors :)

So after a nice gathering with the relatives who live out in the suburbs of Toronto, on the way out I asked if they could recommend us any good streets around them with over the top Christmas lights displays. You might put up a string or two in Europe, but NOT the extravaganzas you can get in America/Canada, so thought the bf would get a kick out of it.

We were recommended a great street, but my plan may have backfired. Bf has this look in his eyes he can get when he gets excited about a new project, and I saw it while he looked at the glistening LED icicles and animatronic reindeer. Yeah, when we finally get around to getting one, we are totally going to be that house. :P

I finally got the majority of my outside lights up yesterday.

In my neighborhood, you would be laughably tardy. Our holiday lights season lasts from Halloween to Easter.

To be fair, I do like it when people leave the lights up to later in January. So damn dark out, it's nice to see some pretty stuff break up the monotony!

I did hang some snowflake lights from the eves of the garage. This year it was actually for the entire span of the eves. :P

I don't do a single thing until after Thanksgiving. Then I like to leave them up for a couple weeks in January. I can't stand that everything goes away on the 26th. I mean it is the 12 Days of Christmas for Christ's sake. :P

I'm not in much of a Christmas mood in October. I wait until the spirit moves me. Wasn't sure it was going to happen this year. But I finished last night.

What do y'all think of Christmas songs? I get annoyed at the stores that start playing them in November, and the stations that change their format for the month of December. This year it's two of my favorites so I'm down a couple scan-through options on my car rides.

Then when I went to MD for four days this year, both my parents and my sister had one of those stations running nonstop. Like, even when the TV was on in the next room, and even while eating. It's a strange habit they have all the time, but with Christmas songs it was downright offensive. And this wasn't even December yet! So I got sick of them early.

In normal years I'll tune in starting to Christmas music about now, a week before Christmas. And we have our favorite albums we'll play at home. But it's the one thing that I'm happy to have go away December 26. I do like keeping lights and decorations up through the first week of January, but the songs seem irrelevant by then.

I certainly get sick of the non stop barrage of songs. I don't start playing or tuning them in until about now.

I don't mind hearing Big Crosby croon a few times, but non-stop christmas music would drive me batty.

There's at least one and I think 2 local stations that go full 24/7 Christmas songs sometime in mid November through Christmas day.

One of the reasons I like having satellite radio. I can always find a station that is NOT playing non-stop Christmas music. :P

I always listen to some music far too early (like, Dec 1), then take a break for a week or two, then will probably listen to more these last few days as we coast into the holiday proper.

In my household, the canon Christmas music is defined as whatever was on the Time-Life Christmas CD, circa 1989. Which had all the classics, and we can now find on Spotify as a playlist, and because I have a lot of childhood memories wrapped in that CD we have to listen to it at least once. Meanwhile my mom is all "oh my god don't you guys know of any other Christmas music."

Her thing in turn is at some point Christmas Eve we MUST play Silent Night (and most music that eve has to be more the religious stuff than Santa stuff). Apparently when she was a kid in communist Hungary the song was banned as being too religious, so one of her memories after church was going home and my grandpa tuning the radio until he could find an Austrian radio station playing Silent Night.

I guess I will have to sneak it into the playlist a few extra times this year.

It's a beautiful song especially when arranged well and sung by a talented choir.

Less than a week until my partner is here, yesssss!

Not sure why but I feel like I've been getting less spammed with bad Christmas music this season than past ones. Not a single instance of "Dominic the Donkey" yet, impressive.

Merry Christmas guys.

I’m on holiday where I deliberately left my laptop at home, but wanted to come here and say that!
