I actually knew it was going to be an M87 reveal a few days ago from an inside source, but was sworn to secrecy. The Sag A* data was just not as good quality so is going to take longer to process, but at least we have that to look forward to!

I remember reading somewhere that it was M87 as well. I suppose that yeah, Sagittarius A* must be harder to process, lots of "light pollution" in the middle

Oh I saw that! The science was hilariously bad, like, not even trying to make sense. There's a scene where an asteroid crashes into the ship and literally starts rolling down one of its giant hallways.

Probably would have been PG-13 if the rating had existed at the time TBH. It was quite violent, and often in inventively gruesome ways.

Sitting at my favorite pub drinking an 'Astronaut Outlaw' (I have no clue why they chose that name) and reading the black hole article in the latest issue of Science News, I came across a statement that I've read forwards, backwards and sideways, yet can't wrap my head around.

"The EHT image appears as a fuzzy, asymmetrical ring with a dark void in the center - the shadow of M87's black hole on its accretion disk."

How the hell does a black hole cast a shadow? I know the data the image was created from is in the radio spectrum, but still.

Perhaps we have a radio astronomer in the house that might help me out on this.

The apparent issue with weird beer names is you cannot in the USA usually have more than one brewery these days with the same beer name, as they're trademarked. Can you imagine how hard it is these days to find a new beer name?

That was an extremely good explanation of the image. Thanks. But I still don't understand how the term 'shadow' is appropriate. I guess it's not important - I understand the difficulties in describing something like a black hole using terms people can relate to.

Yep, there's so many breweries popping up that I've seen trademark issues when more than one happens to pick the same name inadvertently. Even Great Lakes had to stop and rebrand one of their seasonals when they found out another place already had an "Alchemy Ale."
