I did this a few years ago, and even worse it was at my house and of my own doing. After we received funding for the new museum I decided to have a celebration. I wasn't even nervous until the party started. Rooster was pretty little still, and I was not at all upset that she wanted to stay inside, away from the people. It gave me an excuse to hide away!

I tend to always have an earworm, a song stuck in my head. Usually just one or two lines repeated over an over. Even when it's from a song I like it drives me crazy!

Today's song is "High Hopes" by Panic! at the Disco. They have been around for quite a while but I've only just discovered them. HH is a recent hit. And the lead singer just partnered with Taylor Swift on a single that Rooster and I have been listening to.

One thing that helps me get rid of an earworm when I need to concentrate is to listen to music. I like the few songs of P!ATD I've heard so I dug up a playlist of theirs on Spotify. It was literally dozens of songs, it spanned a few hours. I can't say I listened very closely, but they were good enough songs. They did the job of providing good background music while cancelling out the noises of the office.

So, of course what happens as soon as I took the headphones off? "Had to have high high hopes for a living....couldn't make a dime when had to make a living....now I've got to be that one in a million...."



A related story: another one of their recent hits is "Hey Look Ma, I Made It." I hadn't every really paid attention to the lyrics other than the title. Well, the kids and I came across the video on Youtube the other day. It starts off with a puppet version of the lead singer, who soon becomes a puppet of the music industry. It was funny when he vomited, disturbing when he started doing cocaine, Rooster screamed and ran away when he was getting beaten up, which was fortunately right before the BDSM puppet scene. I understand the meaning of the video, but I wish I had known it was not kid appropriate when we watched it! The video for High Hopes is completely innocent.

Dr. Internet told me that Crohn's disease is a risk factor for gum disease. That could also be related to how I broke my leg...having been on steroids could have led to bone density problems.

I am grateful that my disease is kept in check with medicine, and overall it doesn't impact my daily life. But I'm hoping to keep these bones and teeth around for another 43 years....

Once more, a car turned left in front of me while I had a walk sign, at the same intersection it's happened before. As I usually do, I waived my arms to make sure they saw me, maybe try to get them to stop. The car stopped after making the left and rolled down their window so I went over to them. I told them I had a walk and they can't turn left in front of me and they said oh, go ahead, I'm sorry.

Here comes my demographic bias. It was a senior woman, so I am inclined to believe that she truly didn't know. If it were just about anyone else, well first they wouldn't have stopped, but second they would have known the law, and didn't care.

I'm hoping she has learned something from this and pays more attention from now on. But that scares me. If she didn't know you are supposed to yeild to pedestrians, what else doesn't she know? Who else doesn't know this law? Ugh. Scary world out there.

Yep, although the 'not supposed to mow down pedestrians' is also a law.

Bendites are generally pretty good with pedestrians. Yesterday, though, as I was starting to cross a street at a marked crossing, I saw a car speeding (it's a 25 MPH zone) towards me, obviously not slowing to let me cross. I waved at the young woman to get her attention. She flipped me off as she sped past.

So, totally different subject, but the tightness in my chest as I read your post reminded me of this.

We have season tickets to our major league soccer team. A wonderful thing they do at the end of a win is play the Oasis song Wonderwall. The team gathers in a line and sings along with the crowd. When it gets to the line "you're my wonderwall," the team runs toward the crowd, holding hands forming a wall, then break off and applaud the fans. It got started years back when the team was way down in the minor leagues. The team actually started it, they would sing it to the fans as a thank you for their support. (Why that song, I don't know.) I think it's fabulous!

This weekend the team won. As we were walking out of the game a man in a group of guys behind us said "I wonder why they sing that song." Another said, "yeah, that's gay." I turned to them and said it's disrespectful to call something gay in that manner. The first guy said "Oh, god" and rolled his eyes. From there I just kept walking. We continued with them behind us for quite a bit. They were obnoxious but didn't say anything more disrespectful. They did suggest some alternative bands to play, like Guns n Roses.

I used this as a learning opportunity for Buster. I told him that I felt a tightness in my chest, because I was really bothered by what they said, and I wanted to continue to advocate for an oppressed group, but I realized this was not the place for it, having two little kids with me. It's not worth getting into it, because I'm not going to change their mindset. Speaking up once may have been appropriate, but beyond that I risked altercation. Buster gets it. I'm proud of him in that sense!

We have season tickets to the Bend Elks baseball games. Nice front row seats along the third base line. Bend having the demographics that it does, some the fans show up sporting t-shirts that clearly place them in the demographic that would make anti-gay comments, among other things.

I try to just enjoy the baseball. Most folks are quite nice so it isn't that hard.

pumpkinpi, much as that entire episode sucked, I think it's awesome how you explained it to Buster. I think some of the biggest lessons one can learn from their parents are the ones where you learn how the world really works, and how to act accordingly in those situations.

So, it sucks, but at least Buster probably got a good lesson out of it.

Another memorial service for a friend gone too soon. It's a special kind of hurt to watch a father bury his 38 year old son.
