Yikes! IIRC I think I saw that the shooter committed suicide.

Yeah, he shot himself after killing two people.
Main story coming out of this - other than the trauma of knowing we're now 'on the map' as a city with a gun incident - is that one of the victims, a Safeway employee, confronted the shooter and attempted to disarm him. He failed and got dead for his efforts but the police and everyone else agree that he undoubtedly saved lives as the shooter's apparent intent was to kill a whole lot more people. So he's been lauded as a hero ... until his backstory came to light. Our hero was a convicted sex offender. Arrgh. To his credit (beyond the obvious credit due from his heroism), that was 30 years ago and he's been an exemplary citizen since getting out of prison. I, for one, believe in the possibility of redemption.
Other significant story is that of the Bend police arrived two minutes after the 911 call was received and immediately rushed in the building while shots were still being fired. No hesitation. We're looking at you, Uvalde police.
Last item, which apparently only I seem to find significant, is that during all the press conferences, memorials and other public appearances since the shooting, the Mayor Pro Tem has represented the city (along with one or two of the city councilors). The Mayor herself has been silent and unseen. After a few days, I sent a message to the City's official IG account asking after her welfare. No response. Yesterday, as part of a recap of events, it was mentioned that she was camping out of cellphone range and came back "to a city that had changed." Still no peep out of her yet, though. Weird, as she's a good mayor.

Our first notification this morning was for a "a specific threat to shoot persons on the TC campus" and named the person who made the threat. As more information has come out, it turns out it's a former mayor of a small southern MN town with a history of mental illness. He made some pretty specific and graphic threats, talking about shooting UMN students and "parents lock up your kids." So staff was first encouraged to work from home, and then ordered to go/stay home. Fortunately the term hasn't started so there aren't a lot of students on campus.
It took me until not long ago to remember that Rooster was supposed to take a field trip to the Minneapolis campus to see a "Physics Force" stage show. I called the school right away, and fortunately they cancelled it.
It was already too close to home, and this makes it even closer. I'm still processing it. Trying not to think about how....god, I can't even write it.
I've always been devastated by shootings, but it's been increasingly hard this past year. There was a shooting on the UNC campus and I had a zoom meeting scheduled with some close colleagues there right as lockdown was happening--heard about what they were going through in real time. The most recent school shooting was in Iowa, and I had to check to make sure it wasn't near where my cousin lives with her teenagers. And that is the first one that when I read about, I actually cried.
We're still getting updates....a news article said they have deputies posted at his house "in case he shows up there" so I am assuming there is a pretty serious manhunt on. I'm anxiously awaiting the all clear that he's in custody.
Dare I say thank god for facebook? That's where he posted his threats.
