Others include defenses of pedophiles (which I guess makes him and Gaetz birds of a feather), and a bunch of creepiness about the size and age of women he's interested in. He also describes himself as a raging misogynist, because of course he does.

Is he serious? Is he trolling? Who even cares? Nobody should talk like this at all ever, let alone in a professional capacity, let alone anywhere near the instruments of government.

Kinda related (in my mind at least)- one of the strange things in recent years that I'm dimly aware is an issue, but I am not personally involved with because yuck, is how much misogyny is on the rise thanks to people like Andrew Tate, particularly amongst younger men. My friend who teaches high school told me recently they had to hold an assembly just explaining how that crap was bogus because they realized so many of the students had watched this crap and internalized it on some level. So in that context, it's not a shock to me when these ideas get more and more mainstream, unfortunately.

It's just depressing to think about because you hope generations are getting better for everyone, and then it turns out it's so easy to slide backwards.

I do still have hope on the generational politics front because Gen Z girls lean very progressive, likewise Gen Z LGBT people (which is a large percentage, much larger than for Millenials IIRC). The demographic change is still happening, and it's part of why Republicans failed to achieve their electoral goals last year. But yeah the scale of sexist backlash among boys is... really bad. Same reason as Gamergate, Google/Facebook/et shit profiteering off acting as far-right propaganda organs.

Transphobia is part of the same picture too (a lot of it is built on top of misogyny IMO, and it's fought on the same political grounds). I have a trans friend who is a teacher, whose school had to take measures recently to protect from their own students. I'm terrified for their safety. Shit is all just kind of spiraling right now.
