Coronavirus

TL;DR
1. Taylor Swift rocks!
2. Covid sucks.

Full story: Rooster and I saw an AMAZING Taylor Swift concert this weekend. It was just so much fun, such an elaborate production, and I love that Rooster and I were able to enjoy this together.

We've still be masking, as I described in my earlier post. I had been masking, except for meals, at the conference in Tennessee for 5 days leading up to the concert. While I was not the only person of ~300 attendees wearing a mask, I saw about 5 people total wearing one so at most times I was the only person in a room with a mask.

At the concert I let Rooster take the lead on whether or not we'd wear masks, and she took hers off once the concert started. I have to admit, it would have been pretty uncomfortable with them on. So this was the first time she'd been inside, around people, maskless, for more than just a meal, in over a year!

I do recall something about a woman sitting right next to Rooster. We were in our seats for about a half hour before the concert started, and I couldn't say how long she was there too, but definitely for some of that time period. Once the concert started, after a few songs she sat down and looked like she wasn't felling well. She left probably about a quarter of the way through, and never came back. I felt bad for her, but I didn't really think much about it with regards to covid.

I kept wearing my mask at work this week--I think at this point I am only one still doing so. But I kept thinking, maybe if I get through this week without having caught it, I'd stop masking after the holiday.

Last night I had tap class and I thought maybe I'd go maskless, then I decided, better not. That was day 4 since the concert, still within the time period from exposure to symptoms.

I got home from the tap class (a classmate and my teacher both had been to the concert!) and Rose said, my throat's felt scratchy and swollen all day. (She didn't bring it up to her dad who was working at home, or to us at dinner, or to her dad again when he took her to Buster's baseball game and then the three of them went out shopping for......something.)
So I tested her. Very faint line.....not even pink.....so faint that I wondered if it might have been an issue with the test. I checked online and found that it's possible to get that shadow with a negative test, if somebody moves it before the 15 minutes are up. Which Buster did. So I figured we'd test again this morning.

She woke up today with a better but still scratchy throat. I tested her again, and again saw a faint line. This time a bit stronger. So yeah, probably, she has it. Fortunately the scratchy throat is really all that she has. No fatigue, no fever.

At the moment I feel fine myself, and tested negative. But I was alongside her Saturday night, and have been around her quite a bit since then. so, the masking and isolation have begun.....

It's just so frustrating that for the past few months we've been the only maskers around, and then on the rare occasion we let our guard down, we get it. That's how it happened 2 of the other times we got covid. It's not that we go around all willy-nilly, not masking. Last summer Rooster went to a sleepover; we were well aware that it could result in covid but were tired of denying her social time with friends. Last winter Buster went over to friends' houses a couple times, not wearing masks. Those are pretty much the only times we've gone anywhere and chosen *not* to wear masks. And it got us. So I'm fully aware that we were taking risks. It's just that other people seem to be riskier than we are, and aren't getting sick. I don't know anyone who's had it since MrPi did about 6 weeks ago. (That's a case we don't know where it came from!)

Funny thing. If I do come down with it, it will be at the same time as last year, so the 2nd covid birthday in a row for me.

Another thing that's frustrating is that it throws the house into chaos, or at least I somehow make it that way. The kids don't have school or camp this week so they were already at home. I was already working at home a half day, and I cancelled a couple in person meetings I had but am keeping meetings that can be done on zoom. Still, I just can't focus because I have to keep track of a million things. Here's what's running through my head, feel free to stop reading: Should I take Buster to his orthodontist appointment this morning? Sure, he wasn't at the concert to probably isn't a risk. And I'll N95. Oh, but Rooster has an appointment this afternoon, better cancel that......and oh darn, she has to miss her dance class tonight. And WHOOPS! There she is now coming out for lunch, better put my mask on.....hmmm. MrPi was already going to stay home with the kids tomorrow. Should I stay home, or is it ok to go in to work if I test negative? If I stay home, what do I have to get covered at work? Oh bummer.....we have tickets to Murder on the Orient Express tomorrow night. That's pretty much out.....Hmmm, let's do the calculations, Rooster's day 6, her out of isolation day, would be July 4th. If I test positive today, my out of isolation day is July 5th so I could go back into to work then! But now I struggle exactly how I did when MrPi was sick, not knowing if we want to play this annoying isolation dance at home to not get sick, or just get sick and get it over with. I was proud that nobody but MrPi got sick last month, but maybe if we had caught it, we would be immune and not going through this now. TBH, having it now is better than having had it then.

Oh no, I'm so sorry- you guys really seem to have bad luck in this! :(

Like really, I can't say I've masked terribly much in the last ~year since the one time I got Covid, and did a good amount of conferences and travels, and while I think I've had a cold twice that I ran tests for, no positives. Statistically something should have happened for sure, going by your baseline, but nada.

Did ask the doc yesterday at the prenatal appointment about flu/Covid vaccines this fall, bc next time I need to get a TDAPP booster (I find it interesting how they DNGAF when you last had it, they just give it to everyone), and she said when they get the flu one in September they'll jab me, and since it looks like they'll release a Covid one then like the flu one they'll probably tell me to get one then too when it's out. But there's basically no point in getting one now if I got one last fall.

Update: BRIGHT pink positive for Rooster. The rest of us are fine still.
She has swollen glands and throat, but it doesn't even hurt she says. It's just noticeable when she swallows or talks. Nothing else. She was very freaked out about getting it again because it hurt her pretty hard last time. I'm so glad she's feeling ok! She also doesn't go stir crazy being locked in her room so overall it won't be too bad of an experience for her. Let's hope. In our family's experience nobody got worse after they started getting better. We were all over it within 3-4 days.

Wow, like Rommie said, you do seem to have bad luck with covid.

I haven't done much masking in the past year, which is typical for this area. During the last several months, the only time I have is when driving my next door neighbor to her medical appointments (she has cancer). I'm not very social though so am rarely in crowded rooms.

I learned that she might not have been exposed at the Taylor Swift concert. The day before was her last day of Dungeons and Dragons day camp. She forgot her mask, and they were inside more than usual that day.
(I blame MrPi. I was out of town. )

But still, bad luck. That was about the 3rd time EVER in 3 years that she's forgotten a mask.

The rest of us feel perfectly fine so far. Today is our day 5 since exposure to her but we haven't tested yet. (I'm not going to. It's my birthday and if I have covid I don't want to know. I had it on my birthday last year.) We're not going anywhere anyway. It's been a rather depressing holiday weekend, not being able to go anywhere or be in the same room with our daughter. Not that we had big plans, but we can't really be spontaneous either.

Blargh- as I mentioned elsewhere, F has been feeling bad since Friday, and isolating while visiting our parents' since he started feeling bad as we have a baby (so cold or not, who wants the baby to get it), and we finally got tests and he tested positive today. Probably got it on the trip down.

I'm paranoid in trying to figure out if I have it too- is my throat sore or did I not drink enough water? am I tired because I'm sick or just because I didn't sleep enough?- but if I net feel fine, well, someone has to take care of this baby, and better me than an active germ factory!

The dumb thing about this all though is I'm mainly disappointed because we were gonna take advantage of child care by doing other things- my birthday is tomorrow, and we wanted to do a fancy night out for example. So yeah, guess I should just be happy that no one is super ill especially baby, but it just sucks that it got ruined. :(

I'm so sorry. Covid sucks. It sucks that we're in a "new normal" where we have this virus that circulates as commonly as the cold, strep, flu, etc, and for most people isn't much more serious than those, but it still has the potential to be very harmful to others, so we have to go to extremes when someone gets it. Like, when the kids would get strep when they were little, we didn't isolate them. Sometimes it passed to the rest of the household, sometimes it didn't. We just dealt with it.

I can actually really understand why people don't take the same precautions as you. You're trying to keep your baby healthy. But to do that, you have to go through the major bummer and inconvenience of F not being able to join us. Some people see only that. They KNOW it's going to be a bummer, but since they don't know for sure it could cause a serious health problem for someone else, they take the risk.

Yeah, and as I said, I had the advantage that he got sick while I had extra family help and am not back at work yet. Most people don't even if they might want to, and I think as such try to protect themselves by saying "it's no big deal anyway."

Anyway, in our case it all turned out better, he was up and about by Tuesday and back to normal helping by Wednesday, and she never got sick. I had a scratchy throat for a few days, so did take a Covid test Tuesday morning that was negative... and ok, maybe I could have retested swabbing my throat yadda yadda, but as I said, someone had to take care of the baby! So it was enough for me to reckon that if I had it it was a pretty low level.

Well, may we never have a greater problem.

Not alot of traffic on this thread, which I guess is a good thing. We went on two short trips in the last two weeks. One to Oregon, one to Canada (a few hours north of Toronto. Mrs. T started feeling crappy on the way back from Canada, tested positive Sunday, I tested negative. I tested positive Mon-Wed but remained symptom free. Feel a bit congested, and hacky this morning. I've stayed away from everyone which is annoying because I had three days to help my buddy before he heads off to Jersey for over a month to do a big solo project there. I just couldn't risk giving it to anyone. I've been beating myself up doing a bunch of messy chores around the property in 90 degree heat. I guess I'm trying to sweat the virus out.

@Thumper, don't push yourself! Give yourself time to rest and recover! And likewise for your wife. Long COVID is strongly correlated with exertion/resuming physical activity too early during or when recovering from COVID, and while the vaccine greatly reduces the risk, it doesn't eliminate it.

I appreciate the concern, I was asymptomatic for several days but like I said, got a bit congested and hacky late in the week. And I pretty much did not much the last 3-4 days except mow. Thankfully covid shots and previous experience seems to have made symptoms if any quite minor. It's just the chore of isolating so I don't risk giving it to someone who might have health conditions that would make things serious.

Good for you for isolating!

We are pretty regulalrly maskless here, except over the summer I masked leading up to our Europe trip, in airports, and the week after when I was back at work. But not at all during the trip. Buster and I came down with colds, but nobody in the whole soccer club got covid. I think a couple people did at my conference.

Last weekend we were at the State Fair multiple days. It was packed and we were in and out of buildings all day. But none of us came down with anything. I was joking that if none of us got sick after that I would declare the pandemic over!

But of course that's not true. Perhaps Minnesotans are doing a good job isolating too, so there weren't a lot of sick people at the fair.

The kids and I got our covid shots yesterday. My arm hurts, as does Buster's, but Rooster is feeling pretty crummy today. None of us have had side effects that past few rounds of shots. But I realized it's her first time getting the adult dose, so perhaps that's it.

Roomie and I I got the new COVID and flu vaxes on Friday... We did not have a fun time. Both of us slept badly due to fever, and were basically out of commission on Saturday. If the reactions are any indication, this winter's strains are going to be nasty.

I am still wearing an N95 or KN94 in basically all enclosed public spaces FWIW, as are both my roommates. With two of us being immune compromised there's not really much choice. At this point I don't begrudge most healthy people going maskless, but it's not a good picture combined with the institutional denialism and obstructionism around COVID - a govt that keeps trying to restrict access to vaccines, insurance companies that don't want to cover them, businesses that refuse to improve their HVAC systems, etc. I still remember my best friend on death's door and mass graves in Central Park, but abled people seem to have forgotten. It's depressing to think about.

I'm going to ask my doc if he thinks it's a good idea to get the next covid booster this fall. I actually don't know how long I have to wait after a covid diagnosis before I should get a booster. If there is a shot available that covers new variants that my shot last year doesn't, I'll do it. I've never had anything more than a really sore shoulder, so I'm due to get sick with the next shot or two but It's worth it.

And thanks, I'm feeling fine. I've got my usual Aug-Sep allergies. Actually, I didn't get a break from the allergies last winter because we had no winter. :(

The new vax has been available for a while now, and yes, please definitely get it. Even if you're perfectly healthy and have zero risk of getting fucked by long COVID, the vaccine makes transmission less likely. Elderly and immunocompromised people will thank you.

IIRC they recommend you wait about 8 weeks after Covid. Also, it’s pretty much like the flu these days. New variants keep popping up and yes you should get newest vaccine booster.

Well I'm planning on it. I haven't heard back from my doc's office yet. (Their auto phone system absolutely sucks) But I'm still a few weeks from making it to 8 weeks. After I talk with doc, I'll probably get scheduled for late October or early November.

Got my booster shot yesterday, my 6th. Man it was so much easier than getting the first couple. 8-)
Back then we had to jump through so many hoops then wait 3 weeks, then wait in line for an hour in our car heading to a drive in vaccination facility. Then had to wait in our car for 20 minutes to make sure we didn't blow up or whatever. Yesterday, I jumped on the computer just to research making an appt. (Mrs. T had made all the previous ones.) I ended up being able to make a same day appt and was given so many time slot availabilities that if I would have picked the earliest one, I would have been late getting up there after finishing all the on line consents, registrations, and medical history stuff.

I walked in early, got stuck immediately, and went about the rest of my chores. Only a moderately sore shoulder today which is usual and completely acceptable.
