Somewhat poignant.

Before FWIS, although overlapping a bit, I was a member of another forum. It happened to be a food forum and served the purpose for the owner to promote foodieness in the city mostly. But it was more, just as FWIS is more than a forum. Well, there was turmoil with the owner and his financing of the forum and it all came to end after many years. While I have contact with a few of them, most faded away into the ether. People whom, like here, if they hadn't logged in after a short while, someone would ask "where is she (or he)". It's as if that community and the bonds we had never existed. But it did exist.

I think the most telling thing for me was when we were down for awhile some months ago, and YEAH we had the Facebook group but it was so not the same. Any random stuff posted there just didn't get traction for whatever reason unless it was general life updates type stuff. So I imagine if/when we fade into the ether yes I will keep in touch with you all on some level most likely... but yeah nowhere near the same. Plus no video ads here.

I also find it interesting how lately Internet forums really seem to be losing popularity- I have some travel ones that I also frequented and one is dead, one is withering, and the latter used to be THE place to go on the Internet if you wanted to know recent travel info. These days I guess traffic goes more to Reddit and Tumblr and those sorts of places, but amusing a place Reddit (for example) can be to kill a few hours, it's just far too big for me to know anyone individually.

Ah well, in 10 years it'll be something else. Hopefully we'll still be here to comment on it though.

These days I guess traffic goes more to Reddit and Tumblr and those sorts of places, but amusing a place Reddit (for example) can be to kill a few hours, it's just far too big for me to know anyone individually.

I actually stopped going to Reddit and imgur a few months back. The people there are too dickish. I suppose the anonymity and huge number of people encourage that sort of terrible behaviour. I don't need that unpleasantness in my life. This is a much nicer place.

Never been to Reddit, don't particularly care to either.

Since I am basically a misanthropist, I stay away from "social networks", I am only a member of LinkedIn to see if it helps me get a job outside banana-land (and so far hasn't, obviously), and I joined FaceBook so I could talk with you guys while the board was down.

No need for another social outlet for me.

Interestingly, my participation in forums was practically zero before I started participating in FWIS. My main experiences with forums up until I came to FWIS was that most forums were full of shit throwing trolls who seemed to exist solely for the purpose of bullying others. Since my instinctive reaction to trolls and bullies is to shoot them on sight and/or avoid places they hang out I never bothered to register with most forums I found. Brite told me about FWIS and for the first few months I was like "Well, the resident troll mostly gets shit thrown back at him. maybe I will hang around and see what happens".
