The "What Are You Listening To?" Thread Mark II

Postby The Supreme Canuck » Thu Jan 16, 2014 6:36 am

Could have sworn that we had started a new one of these since the big reset. Looks like no. So here we are! What good are you listening to these days?

I'll start. Here's a few of mine:

I See, I Say by Ebony Bones
Beast by Nico Vega
Righteous Smoke by Monster Truck
Diplomat by Itch
Electric Pow Wow Drum by A Tribe Called Red

...bit of a variety there. Also, yes, my musical tastes are ridiculous. That's what happens when you don't give a crap about music until your 20s; no influence from when you were a teen leads to odd results.

"Blue Blood Blues" by Blind Willie Dunn's Gin Bottle Four (found me a vintage jazz/blues site -- some neat old stuff back to the 'teens and '20's).

Not all that disparate, actually. After listening to them with your links (I had not heard of any before), I can easily see how someone who likes one might like them all.

My latest acquisition: The Winery Dogs. Richie Kotzen, where have you been all my life and why haven't I been paying attention???

As for my CD player (now that I have a car new enough to have one):
Slave to the System (Damon Johnson is god)
Some vintage Yes CD
Kim Mitchell
Pat McGee
And I think an old Heart album.
When I switch to CD, I've pretty much been sticking with Slave lately.

Captain Swoop on CQ introduced me to Carolina Chocolate Drops; already on my wish list.

Just never quite been able to get into Godsmack. As for the others, we share very similar tastes.

You know, now that you mention it, I can see it. I had thought that there were two strains of similar songs there, but I can see that they're a little closer than I had thought. Huh.

Also, I'm with Thumper as to what you've got in your car at the moment. Other than Godsmack, I'm entirely on board.

Godsmack isn't for everyone, fer sure, and I don't even like most of it. But listen to this one if you will. Voodoo

I recall that one was pretty awesome when I saw them in concert.

Other stuff in rotation, bouncing around in the car:
Sass Jordan's first release
Pearl Jam's first (The kid watched the PJ documentaries and I thought she might like to listen to the whole first album.
Healing Sixes first, Doug Henthorn: The Voice from Indy
and the latest from Black Country Communion* Wow, Glenn Hughs' voice.

*Geo, or anyone who likes Zep, you might give these guys a listen. I like all three albums.

Yeah, sorry, just not for me, I suppose.

Thump - Black Country Communion is interesting. I keep really wanting to like what I'm hearing, but they're a bit off for me. Maybe I've just not found the right track, yet? Any suggestions?

If you were to pick one song, which one?

ETA: In other words, what TSC asked in the post above but which I overlooked.

Second album, "The Battle for Hadrian's Wall." It's live, not my favorite version. It's Joe on lead vocals. Most of the other songs have Glenn singing the lead.

^^^ as played by the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1927. I'd comment further but my words can't do it justice... Give it a listen.

Carley Simon's "The Spy Who Loved Me" came on one of the Rehash stations Thursday on my way home. I belted it out at full volume despited the fact that it is now 2 notes above my range.

The thing I like about that release is the fact that it came out before the theme song Madonna did. What made me include that one in the mix, I had Louis Armstrong's "We Have All The Time In The World" (which is included on the CD) stuck in my head. The Bond theme itself is jazzy which blends with some of the other choices.

Tonight as most Saturdays, my radio will be tuned to jazz-fm from 8pm - midnight, it is "bluz-fm" hosted by Danny Marks. A great mix of music from early to present day.

Spent most of today alternating between Mozart and the Black Angels. Both are fantastic for Getting Stuff Done, in their own (very different) ways.
