Major chemical spill in the USA

Why is this in politics?
Well, because this is exactly where it should be.
You can't stop things like this happening with self regulation.
What you need is effective regulation.
That means it must be fixed at the political level.
Chances of that ever happening when you get lobbyists pretty much writing the policies, ZERO.

Agreed. We keep having trains full of crude oil and propane blow up all over the country. Also, in the US.

Same issue.

And heaven forbid anyone attempt to transport nuclear spent fuel - which doesn't blow up, leak, contaminate the water, air or anything at all - through someone's town. Holy crap! Can't have that! We'll regulate that into an impossibility.

But toxic chemicals? Hey, no problem. Come on through. We don't need govt oversight on that stuff.

Sorry. The idiocy of it all just astounds me.

So, it's okay to drink now... unless you're pregnant.

And I hear that the company responsible for the leaks has already filed bankruptcy to avoid being held financially liable. :o

something i heard: if Al Quaida had managed to poison the drinking water of 300,000 Americans, the US would already have invaded a country, but since it's a US corporation it's simply something you'll have to accept as the free market at work...

Technically there are a number of multinationals that have cost more in both dollars and lives than AlQeda has.
Union Carbide for example had 20,000 people die because of a leak of cyanide from one of their factories. An entire village was wiped out.

It's not about how many people die. It's about your intent. If you intend to scare people and threaten them, then it's bad, even if you kill just one person.

But if you're trying to make money and you accidentally kill 20,000 people, it's okay, because your intentions were good.

Worth noting: IRC the Union Carbide CEO at the time visited the village and then was placed under house arrest by the local police chief for manslaughter. He was under house arrest for a couple hours until he posted bail and promptly fled the country, and the Indian government keeps campaigning for the guy's extradition to no avail.
