I think that Senator Sanders should have had thought this through before saying it.

Sanders slams corporate media, calls for Democratic Fox News

at around 2:17

....I think that that we've got to think about ways that the Democratic Party for a start, starts funding the equivalent of Fox Television...

Yes, I heard the rest of the quote to make sure it wasn't taken out of context. Sure, "Corporate Media" focuses more on gossip that actual problems. But from what I've Seen of Fox Television they are not exactly a good standard to follow. As I have said several times, WE down here in Bananaland, HAVE the left-wing equivalent of Fox News: TeleSur And I sure hope that Senator Sanders doesn't think that That would be a good example to follow.

I have to agree with you. That's a horrible idea. That doesn't solve corporate media. It just takes corporate media in a different direction. I'd like to get back to the days where news was not for profit.

Me three; that's a horrible idea. This may be a harsh analogy, but it seems equivalent to saying "The other side tortures innocents, so we're going to start doing so too".

To me, a huge part of the more blatant governmental dysfunction and partisan stupidity can be traced back to the point where the news (either TV or newspapers) stopped being the news, and creatures like Fox News and the current versions of the New York Post and the Wall Street Journal become propaganda tools (and yes, I know Rupert Murdoch didn't invent Yellow Journalism - he just perfected it :P ). Creating a counter-propaganda tool will just prove Fox News point that "all news is biased, ours is just biased the other direction".

My funny response - I thought that was what MSNBC was all about. :D

Well, the apocalypse is nigh.
Because y'all also agree with me and we know that means there is a fundamental breakdown in the quantum order of the Universe if that happens.

News should have a specific meaning, that is, impartiality and objective.
Otherwise it they should not be allowed to call themselves a News service.
They can call themselves anything else but not News or a News service.
That's not restricting speech, it's clearing garbage.
That's been my position for a long time, though y'all are probably not willing to go that extra mile.
Thanks for all the fish.

Legislate that to be able to call yourself a news service, you have to undergo strict auditing for impartiality as determined by a neutral body and the results made completely transparent as well as the process.

Would congress be able to regulate what a British news agency reports on in the Us? What a Chinese news source reports on in Uganda?

An impartial independent press transcends corporations, governments, borders, and their interests.

The US isn't regulating anything being reported. It just places higher standards on any media wishing to have news in it's name within the US's borders.
If someone wants to use the "News" word, they would need to adhere to a higher standard since most people automatically associate news with accuracy and integrity. At least they were until the recent couple of decades. Though that may not be for long if things keep going the way they are.

Basically you can report what you want, but, if you don't pass the integrity standards you no longer have the right to call yourself a news network. That give a good reason to remain impartial and accurate. Right now, the only reason to report anything is to generate money. The net result being news that is sensationalist and biased.

I understand that your additions of "a neutral body" and "completely transparent" are to prevent what I'm about to say, but I fear that a big problem with your idea is that it would become a tool for the government to control and censor the media and a free press.

There are ways to prevent this.
Regardless, it's not controlling the media, it's making sure that as a news service you need to adhere to a higher standard than a tabloid posing as a news service. Which unfortunately is the vast majority of the current news networks.

Have you heard of Cointelpro?

You probably won't want to read this: https://vault.fbi.gov/cointel-pro

It was the US governments deliberate infiltration of media and various groups that included all manner of illegal activities in an effort to control information.

And I know it's wikipedi but it does give a pretty good account of what it was about.

That was back in the J Edgar Hoover era. You can hardly make the claim that 'government is in bed with media' based on that.

Two reasons, although I'm sure there's more. One, Hoover was a force of nature whose likes doesn't exist today in the US government. Two, the internet. The presence of the internet changes everything in terms of 'secret government activities'.

From the link:
COINTELPRO (a portmanteau derived from COunter INTELligence PROgram) was a series of covert, and at times illegal,[1][2] projects conducted by the United States Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) aimed at surveilling, infiltrating, discrediting and disrupting domestic political organizations.[3]

Oh that...

Yes, I know about that. Heck, there have been Law & Order episodes about such programs.

And I agree completely with geonuc's assessment.

If you would like to consider me naive, I'm fine with that. I'm not in this to change your opinions about such things.

I'm not trying to convince you based on that or anything really. I posted that because it shows that the government has desires to control the media.
Now we have intertwined media and politicians. Just follow the money. I could start posting the links but...

When was the last time anyone was convinced of anything via the internet?

When the internet started up, many including me were under the impression that it would make a big difference because people could finally read up on stuff that no one was reporting. That information would somehow create a better world by the expansion of knowledge.
Unfortunately, like everything else it has failed and is corrupted. Information overload prevents people from researching anything unless they have loads of free time and because there is so much garbage hardly anyone believes anything even when it is factual.
As an example, there are anti-vaxers now that are gaining in popularity because of the internet. Go internet. Making the world a better place by confusing the gullible and dividing the people. Try convincing an anti-vaxer that they are actually making a huge mistake. They know better.

The internet tells us that less than 100 people own more wealth than 50% of the rest of the World. What does the population do with that knowledge?
Many blame the poor for being lazy instead of realizing that the corruption in the systems in place allowed those with the exceptional gift of unfathomable greed to take so much and convince the masses that they are doing the right thing.
The rest who acknowledge the problem won't do anything. They would rather elect a person who represents that greed because they fear that the other guy is more greedy. They are both greedy. One has a vagina, the other has a loud mouth. Heads they win, tails you lose. People would rather not try to make it better because they fear they can't make a difference because the media has already told them so many times that they can't win. So let's just be, pragmatic... roflmfao
The people have already lost, some time ago. They will cling onto the belief that there is hope till one day they wake up and find that one person owns the world and that they are too distracted to realise that the world owner had no power but the power that we gave him to begin with. They will never realise this because they will be too damned busy worrying about their children dying of polio and other diseases because the internet gave them the wisdom to make better educated decisions. They will be too busy working long hours for small pay trying to curb spiraling medical and education debt.

So yeah, I don't much think of the internet as our savior. It's more like a curse.

But enough of this, lets concentrate on the good stuff, like hey, America might have their first female President after their first black President!
What an awesome feat that shows how it's getting better every day with such big strides forward!!!
Every day in every way, I'm getting better and better.
I can just see rainbows streaming from the peoples asses already. :)
Thanks for all the fish.

As with many similar things, such as getting personal information about me off my computer or my phone, I am much more concerned about what private companies are doing, than what the government is doing.
